ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday granted two weeks time to the government by allowing it to move a formal request before the 17-judge full court seeking suspension of the implementation of its decision on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) till the larger bench adjudicates upon the review petition against the controversial ordinance.

A five-judge bench, headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk, had taken up an application filed by Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq requesting the court to delay the hearing on the implementation of the NRO judgment till the 17-judge full court decides the government’s review petition on the judgment that had held NRO to be illegal.

The application was filed by the AG on behalf of the government, but the court held that although paragraph 178 of the detailed judgment on NRO requiring reopening of the Swiss cases was not under review, the court would give ample time to the AG to address all issues by filing the application before the larger bench.

The Supreme Court is hearing two cases on NRO – review petitions against holding of the NRO unconstitutional and about implementation of the verdict.
